Liposuction is best used for control of localized fatty deposits in a patient who is at a stable weight and exhibits a normal body mass index. However, there are many different types of liposuction that can be employed such as tumescent infiltration with syringe methods of extraction, traditional vacuum assisted aspiration, manual cannula management, power assisted liposuction, ultrasonic assisted lipoplasty (internal or external), power assisted liposuction, laser assisted lipolysis, radiofrequency assisted liposuction and more!

So how exactly does liposuction take place? First, depending on the extent of the procedure and patient choice of local or general anesthesia, Dr. Placik will make small incisions to allow access for introduction of the various cannulas to withdraw the fat. In many instances, incisions are so small repair is unnecessary.

In this surgery, an incision is made in the abdomen extending above the pubic area from one hip to the other. Often, an underlying muscular defect is present which can be repaired at the same time. This procedure then involves the removal of excess skin and fatty tissue, and redraping of the skin is needed to achieve the optimal appearance. Depending upon the extent of the required procedure, an inpatient or outpatient approach may be appropriate. A typical surgery only takes a couple of hours at most.

Immediately following the procedure, a light compressive dressing may be applied. Surgical scars will never completely disappear but will gradually fade and become less apparent. The recovery process may vary, with some normal bruising and soreness, according to technique. Postoperatively, you must refrain from strenuous activity for up to six weeks and wear an elastic support garment for two to three weeks.
