Put Yourself on an Anti-Aging Diet

Why not put yourself on an anti-aging diet that’s rich in youth-making nutrients?

In the two-part “Bizarre Anti-Aging Foods” video series, Dr. Mehmet Oz (Dr. Oz to Oprah fans) introduces viewers to exotic foods which make people worldwide feel younger and live longer – from Japan and Central America to Korea and Sardinia.

The Travel Channel’s Andrew Zimmerman tells Dr. Oz, in Part 1, that such people “eat foods we’re unfamiliar with” in the U.S. They also defy time by adopting entire lifestyles which keep them looking great and feeling their best well into what we’d call old age.

At the top of Dr. Oz and Zimmerman’s exotic, anti-aging food list are:

  • Natto (Japan) – fermented vitamin-rich soy beans which ease aches and pains
  • Gooey Duck Clams (Seattle, WA) – iron-rich seafood that’s available online
  • Octopus (Greece) – low cholesterol protein that keeps well when frozen

But, don’t fret if traditional fare sounds a bit more palatable…

Plenty of other foods can also boost your body’s own healing capabilities. The following list of must-eat foods was inspired by and is based, in part, on SELF Magazine’s “38 Anti-Aging Foods: Live a Longer, Healthier Life with These Key Ingredients” slideshow:

  • Fruits – blueberries, raisins, kiwi, dried cherries & strawberries
  • Vegetables – baby spinach, kale, celery & poblano peppers
  • Grains & Legumes – bulgur wheat, quinoa & black beans
  • Nuts – almonds, walnuts & pistachios
  • Spices – cinnamon & curry powder
  • Dairy – nonfat plain Greek yogurt

Supplement Your Anti-Aging Routine with Vitamins

According to SELF Magazine, many of the food items mentioned above can help achieve specific, body-related goals. It’s important to note, too, that more than one pull double duty (ex: baby spinach, cinnamon and blueberries) to reverse the signs of aging in multiple ways.

If you want to address a particular anti-aging issue, there’s probably a supplement you can take. But, before you plunge into a bottle of Vitamin K, C or E consider ways to get adequate nutrition out of food itself. That is, after all, what a healthy diet achieves.

The Mayo Clinic says whole foods offer three main benefits dietary supplements don’t:

  • Phytochemicals & Antioxidants – both slow aging, heal tissues, and protect cells
  • Fiber – high-fiber foods contain key nutrients, aid digestion, and prevent illness
  • Micronutrients – unlike supplements, whole foods offer a range of nutrients

It’s also advisable to consult a doctor, dietician, or nutritionist before changing your diet. While you’re at it, have them order a blood analysis so you’ll know what your nutrient starting point is. That will give you a baseline to measure your progress against.

Revamp Your Look with an Anti-Aging Skin Care Regimen

Dermal fillers and injectables help plump the face where needed and fill in fine lines and wrinkles to improve your skin’s appearance. Many offer long-lasting, if not permanent, results. To maintain that youthful look, consider revamping your skin care regimen:

  • Cleanse – use a gentle cleanser in the morning and again at night
  • Moisturize – follow with a moisturizer suited to your skin type (SPF 15+)
  • Chug-a-Lug – drink 64 oz. of H2O daily to keep your lips and skin hydrated
  • Don’t Be Shy – ask your plastic surgeon to recommend a great skin care line

Give your anti-aging routine a flavorful boost, too! As SELF Magazine notes, “fruits and veggies that contain lycopene and beta carotene help block UV rays to thwart aging [while] Vitamin C stimulates the production of collagen, helping prevent fine lines”.

Foods identified as being rich in skin-smoothing nutrients include:

  • Fruits – kiwis, blueberries, strawberries, lemons & dried cherries
  • Vegetables – kale, baby spinach & poblano peppers
  • Nuts & Other – walnuts & marinara sauce

Who knew looking younger could taste so good? Mmm, mmm!
