Arlington Plastic Surgery
Joseph W. Stephens, III, M.D.
Chili Robinson, M.D.

Board Certified Plastic Surgeons in Arlington, Texas

Liposuction, Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) & Body Contouring

Arlington Plastic Surgery has been enhancing and serving folks in the Metroplex since 1978 under the direction and leadership of Dr. Joseph Stephens. Before merging with Arlington Plastic Surgery, the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Institute of Corpus Christi, created by Chili Robinson, M.D., was on a parallel course since 1983. Each practice focused on becoming an expert in the field of cosmetic surgery, with special emphasis on breast enhancement, face and eyelid lifts, liposuction, and body contouring including liposuction and tummy tucks.

Dr. Robinson and Dr. Stephens have known each other for more than 20 years and have similar values regarding patient-centered care. They both take time to know and form a relationship with each patient. Their joint philosophy is based upon honesty, open communication, and excellence in surgery. Both surgeons take great pride in remaining up to date without rushing to find “study cases”, embracing every fad that comes into this fast-moving and creative field that they love so well. They also have similar philosophies in culturing a warm and caring environment which is responsive to the emotional as well as surgical needs of the patients who entrust their care to them and the practice.

Dr. Robinson is new to the Metroplex, but not at all new to his passion. To make traveling on mission trips easier, he closed his large, well-respected practice in Corpus Christi and merged with Dr. Stephens’s practice. Dr. Robinson feels that cosmetic surgery and reconstructive mission surgery each mirror the other. They improve the outside to allow the self-image to show and shine forth. Both enhance self-esteem as well as the reflection in the mirror.

More About Dr. Stephens

Education

  • Undergraduate: Emory University
  • M.D.: Harvard Medical School
  • General Surgery Residency: University Hospital of San Diego County
  • Plastic Surgery Residency: University of Texas Health Science Center, Dallas

As a board certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Stephens said, “The most rewarding part of my practice is being able to help to improve someone’s quality of life. Many times I have seen a person blossom with a better self-image after correction of some minor flaw in their appearance.

This is an exciting time to be in my specialty, because technology is expanding at an incredible rate. I’m continually learning new techniques, and improving old ones. Breast reconstruction by transfer of living tissue from other parts of the body has become common, with a more natural appearance of the breast."

Plastic Surgery comes naturally for Dr. Joseph Stephens, because it combines his love of surgery and a background of artistic expressions. Both his mother and sister are well-known Georgia portrait artists but he chooses to create his masterpieces with his surgeon's hands, combining his meticulous approach and artist's eye to achieve an aesthetic result. He knew as a youth that he wanted to be a physician, and spent summers in Macon, Georgia, working at the City Hospital and gaining valuable insights into the world of medicine. Restorative surgical procedures on patients with birth defects, burn injuries or other trauma were fascinating to him, and were never forgotten as he pursued his medical education at Harvard Medical School.

His 28 years of Plastic Surgery practice in Arlington have honed the skills learned during his extensive post-graduate training, and he has become one of the most sought-after cosmetic surgeons in the Metroplex. He has the ability to "turn back the clock" without leaving obvious scars from the surgical procedure. Yet he responds eagerly to the challenge of restoring deformed features of other patients, so they do not have to live with painful visual reminders of the past. In his hands, a new life awaits a child born with a facial defect, the woman who has lost a breast to cancer, and the accident victim who has been disfigured.

Dr. Stephens, who is a past Chief of Staff at Arlington Memorial Hospital, trained with Dr. Kenneth Salyer when he was director of the Plastic Surgery residency program at the University of Texas Southwestern School, after surgical training at the University of California, San Diego, and two years in the U.S. Navy as Chief Medical Officer to the Amphibious Force in the Western Pacific and also at the Naval Hospital in Long Beach, California.

Dr. Stephens is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Lipoplasty Society of North America, the American College of Surgeons, the Texas Medical Association and Tarrant County Medical Society. He has served as president of the Texas Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Fort Worth Society of Plastic Surgery and the Arlington Medical Society, and also gives a great deal of his time to several community organizations in Arlington.

  • One year of Family Practice residency, Des Moines, IA

  • Four years of General Surgery Residency in Norfolk, VA

  • Two years of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship at the University of Louisville, KY

Dr. Robinson has been in practice for over 20 years. He specializes in cosmetic surgery and is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He has been a member of the prestigious American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, of which there are only 1850 members. A full list of the other societies, colleges and associations that Dr. Robinson belongs to is available at the office.

During his fellowship in Plastic Surgery, Dr. Robinson studied under Dr. Leonard Weiner, a member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon’s "Blue Ribbon Board", which went to Paris in 1981 and brought back the revolutionary and – at that time – controversial procedure of LIPOPLASTY. Dr. Robinson has been performing liposuction for over 25 years and stayed abreast of the many innovations in this exciting field. These changes include tumescent techniques, ultrasonic assisted liposuction, fat transfers and fat grafting. These procedures are now integrated with lifestyle changes to prolong good results.

Dr. Robinson’s one year of family practice residency has given him a broader and more holistic understanding of the patient, their world, their expectations, and how to maintain these enhancements to their life.

Dr. Robinson’s missionary work has taken him to the Ukraine, as well as Central and South America, on numerous occasions to surgically repair cleft lips and palates and to instruct other surgeons in reconstructive surgery. Dr. Robinson tambien habla español. For his mission work he was honored in 2000 with a nomination for the national Jefferson Service Award.

The proud father of two daughters, college students ages 21 and 19, Dr. Robinson lived in Corpus Christi form 1983 until he moved into a group practice in Arlington, TX, in 2007.

He enjoys traveling with his family, nature photography, reading, hiking, backpacking, kayaking and SCUBA diving. Below are some of Dr. Chili's photographs, taken during his travels.
