A
tummy tuck, also known as
abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that extracts fat and skin from the abdominal region and tightens the muscles of the stomach. Removal of stretch marks that are within the skin is also accomplished. Following tummy tuck at our Indianapolis practice, patients can expect a flatter, more contoured, smoother, and more visually satisfying stomach. Approximate cost for tummy tucks:
Patients considering a
tummy tuck at our Indianapolis practice can choose either a complete or a partial procedure. A full
tummy tuck begins with an incision above the pubic area that extends between the hipbones. The surgeon pulls the abdominal muscles together and stitches them into position. The excess fat is then removed. The surgeon replaces the skin (excess skin and stretch marks removed within this skin) and sutures the original incisions. A complete
tummy tuck takes approximately 2 hours and may or may not be performed as an outpatient procedure. Cessation of all nicotine products is strongly urged 3 weeks pre and post operatively. Smoking before/following
tummy tuck surgery increases the visibility of scarring and causes problems with healing.
If fat deposits are limited to the region below the navel, a partial
abdominoplasty (
mini- tummy tuck) may suffice. In the
mini- tummy tuck, a smaller incision is made, leaving the navel in place. The surgeon stretches the flap of skin down, removes excess fat and tissue, and stitches the flap back into place. The
mini- tummy tuck takes approximately 1 to 2 hours and is usually performed on an outpatient basis. If fatty deposits exist without the presence of skin or muscle laxity,
liposuction may be an option.
Immediately following
tummy tuck surgery, the incisions are dressed with bandages. A tube may be inserted to drain any excess fluid that has collected. Patients may experience some swelling and discomfort, although a doctor can prescribe medication to alleviate these symptoms. Stitches are usually buried and will dissolve on their own. The specifics of each procedure will vary among individuals.
