Shocking Statistics & Body Contouring Trends

In researching body contouring trends (ex: liposuction, tummy tuck, etc.), we stumbled upon some truly shocking statistics. We had no idea people were so body conscious!

That prompted us to weigh the numbers carefully and aim this article at those of you who aren’t quite 100% in love with your existing physiques. It’s even for those of you who love your bodies well enough, but see areas which could use a little improvement.

So, which do you want first? The good news? Or, the not-so-good news?

Are We All Body Contouring Candidates?

The good news is: If you’ve ever admitted that you hate your body, you’re not alone.

In November 2011, FITNESS Magazine and Yahoo! Shine surveyed and interviewed 1,500 adults. The results, which appear in the February 2012 edition of FITNESS Magazine, reveal that 81% of men and women (18 to 64) have “a body part they hate”.

More than half, or 57%, of responding women also said they think they “look fat naked”. But, there were some happy answers, since not all body parts stacked up equally. We found the following responses to body image issues encouraging:
  • Overall, 24% of people admitted, “I’m not perfect, but I look pretty good”
  • 48% of men said they liked what they saw when they looked in the mirror
  • 31% of women ranked their cleavage as a body part worth flaunting
  • 19% put butts closely behind cleavage for their flaunt-worthiness
  • 14% of women liked to show off their legs by wearing miniskirts
The not-so-good news is: The impact body image has on people’s lives is astounding.

Women were more likely to hate a variety of their body parts, though the #1 Most Hated Body Part – among 14% of both men and women – was the thigh. Arms and butts were also in the running, each winning 11% of the Most Hated Body Part vote. What else?
  • 29% of people, when asked, said: “I wish I were more toned & less jiggly”
  • 21% of women (the majority) saw their thighs as public enemy #1
  • 11% of men (the majority) thought their butts were sorely lacking
  • 9% of women (vs. 27% of men) walk around locker rooms naked
  • A scant 1% of women said they’d ever “dare to bare” their abs

Most Popular Body Contouring Procedures

Does the naked truth hurt? We hope not, because we think you’re truly beautiful…

And, we still haven’t told you the BEST news of all. Body contouring procedures can increase confidence and promote a more positive self image. If any of the above statistics ring true for you, the fact that you have options is definitely worth celebrating.

Believe it or not, current trends in body contouring even reflect those findings. In “Report of the 2010 Plastic Surgery Statistics”, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons showed that body contouring is on the rise, with 52,603 procedures performed in 2010.

The (3) Most Popular Body Contouring Procedures, as ranked by the ASPS, were:
  1. Breast Augmentation – with 60% of patients opting for silicone breast implants
  2. Liposuction (including SmartLipoTM) – liposuction numbers increased in 2010
  3. Tummy Tuck – this procedure is also referred to as Abdominoplasty
Other frequently performed body contouring procedures include:
  • Abdominal Etching
  • Breast Lift (or Mastopexy)
  • Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)
  • Post Bariatric or Post Weight Loss Surgery
  • Upper Arm Lift, Lower Body Lift, Butt Lift &/or Thigh Lift
  • Calf Augmentation or Implants, Butt Implants & Pectoral Implants
Treatments exist which can even help eliminate cellulite, scars and stretch marks. In the end, there’s likely a surgical or minimally invasive body contouring procedure that’s right for you. We simply want to be sure you know what they are.

Body Contouring Trends & You

What are trends? And, why should they matter to you? Trends demonstrate a shared experience or mindset. They help us understand what other people are thinking and doing on a regular basis. They remind us we’re not alone in this great, big world.

And, while we’re still on the topic of trends, did you know that…?
  • Breast reconstruction is among the ASPS’s “Top 5 Reconstructive Procedures”
  • 13% of patients typically return to their plastic surgeons for additional work
  • Cosmetic surgery patients range in age from 13 to 55+
  • Those ages 40 to 54 are most likely to schedule cosmetic surgery
As always, we urge you to explore your body contouring options – including risks and benefits – with help from a qualified plastic surgeon. We also encourage you to make decisions that are in your best interest. Don’t choose surgery for anyone else’s benefit.
