News About Tummy Tuck Health Benefits

October 15, 2013

The Wall Street Journal recently published an article discussing the possible health benefits of tummy tuck or other body contouring surgeries performed on patients after significant weight loss.

Researchers in Switzerland conducted a study which was published in the October 2013 issue of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal. They found that patients who underwent a body contouring surgery, such as tummy tuck, following bariatric surgery were more likely to keep weight off than those who did not have body contouring surgery. These types of findings also add to the argument that body contouring proceures performed in this manner are "an essential part of successful weight-loss surgery and should be considered reconstructive and thus covered by insurance."

Some surgeons also feel tummy tuck or other body contouring procedures can be performed in tandem with other abdominal surgeries. Dr. Tripp Holden of the University of Maryland says, "Removing extra skin and fat in the abdomen can lessen the risk of infections that frequently occur in the folds of excess skin. It can also improve healing after surgery."
