How Much Does a Tummy Tuck Cost?

Reviewed by Edward A. Pechter, MD, FACS

learn about plastic surgery financingCosts for a tummy tuck vary according to where you live and the plastic surgeon you choose. According to the ASPS, the average plastic surgeon’s fee for tummy tuck surgery was $5,264 in 2007. The total cost of the procedure may run from $4,000 to $9,000 or more. These costs include the fees for the anesthesia provider, the surgical facility, and the surgeon. Additional fees may include medical tests, prescription medications, and post-surgery garments, but these costs are comparatively minor and in some cases may be included in the overall price. Ask your doctor what his/her policy is in the event that a surgical revision becomes necessary.

The procedure requires several hours in surgery and some doctors may recommend a short stay in the hospital or a recovery center, although this may increase the cost. The cost of a mini tummy tuck will be approximately half that of a full tummy tuck.

As with most cosmetic surgery, abdominoplasty is not usually covered by health insurance although there are some exceptions, such as for individuals who have experienced massive weight loss due to diet or bariatric (weight loss) surgery. Ask your surgeon about payment plans he/she may offer. You can also ask your doctor if he/she works with a plastic surgery financing company. But be careful not to overextend yourself financially and remember than unforeseen problems or complications could result in greater expense as well as more time away from home or work.
