An Overview on SmartLipo: Liposuction Information

 vvSmartLipo™ Overview

Reviewed by Dr. David E. Berman, MD, FRCSC

SmartLipo™ is laser-assisted liposuction that uses local anesthetic instead of general anesthetic. It has less down time and quicker recovery than traditional liposuction because it requires less trauma to the body. Instead of a surgeon manually breaking up fat deposits, the SmartLipo™ laser turns the fat into liquid making it easier to suction out. The method of fat removal and liquid suctioning used by SmartLipo™ is a version of Tumescent Liposuction. The procedure involves injecting a solution of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine into the fatty regions of the areas to be treated. This tumescent fluid numbs the areas to be treated, while considerably decreasing bleeding. As a result, the procedure can be performed while the patient is awake with minimal discomfort.

Plastic surgeons in Europe and South America have used laser-assisted liposuction for approximately 10 years. In 2007, SmartLipo™ became the first laser-assisted liposuction device approved by the FDA for use in the United States. The purpose of this procedure overview is to provide you with a better understanding of the SmartLipo™ procedure and cost so you can make an educated decision with your surgeon if SmartLipo™ is right for you.
